Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes of a modeling photo shoot? Probably a lot more than you would ever know, because the photographer is not only responsible for making sure everything is set before the day of the shoot, but during, and most importantly after the shoot, which is when a lot of the work takes place.
Okay! You love to be in front of the camera, and you recently got signed to an agency who will be representing you and getting you jobs. How freaking exciting! But even though you have really cool ideas and iPhone photos your friends and family have taken of you; you need a professional session to make those potential jobs a reality.
As a photographer the first thing I do when I get a model is to ask what look and concept they’re going for, if they don’t really have anything in mind, the brainstorming phase begins!
The fastest way is to send a couple of photos and see if any of them resonates with him or her. Another great way is to ask them to check your work and tell you which photos they like, and maybe you can find something for them that way.
Once we know what kind of concept we’ll be going for, I like to start going over the outfits, styling, and make up. This is an extremely important part of the shoot, and even more so in a modeling shoot.
So a couple of weeks have passed, and the looks for the shoot are settled, the location is decided, and the date is set!
Now what happens next is a mixture of preparation, spontaneity, technique and art!
